THE HAPPY NEWSPAPER

ILLUSTRATION | ILUSTRAÇÃO

The first thing I liked to do when creating this illustration was to think about the image's composition, and drawing Jayda G was so cool. When I saw the video of the DJ dancing while slaying at a party, the first thing that came to my mind was translating that energy into the illustration. Her joy shone in all directions like a light on a disco ball, so I added that element to the composition along with her speakers and deck. As for the illustration of Imogen Grant, I was impressed by the athlete’s path; seeing Grant win a gold medal at the Olympics and also receive an award for best athlete is very uplifting. So I thought of drawing the athlete rowing from a bird’s eye view, and as she rows, the colors of the water change to the colors of her country. Drawing women who unapologetically show their true selves is one of the biggest inspirations for my creative process. Since I became an illustrator, expressing diversity and equity through bright and happy colors has been my style.

CREATIVE PROCESS

ILLUSTRATION | ILUSTRAÇÃO

Lately, I have been doing my illustrations digitally, both for practicality and for the speed in creating, despite the fact that I'm also a printmaking artist and I do also enjoy creating illustrations using more complex techniques. So for both Jayda G and Imogen Grant's illustrations, I start working in layers. First I sketch the composition, then I work on the line art, and finally, I study color palettes and apply them to the drawing until I reach the result in which I realize that the colors help to illuminate the illustration (usually the first color palette I think is the one that won't work). It seems like a linear process when I describe it, but there are many back and forths until I can finish each step and create harmony between them.
