When creating this illustration, I was immediately drawn to the unique energy of DJ Schak running the Great North Run while performing a live set, and I wanted to translate that sense of movement and rhythm into a still image. What fascinated me was how music and endurance merged in his performance, so I focused on capturing that dynamic flow: his body in motion, the portable DJ setup, and subtle visual elements suggesting sound traveling with him. At the same time, I considered the collective atmosphere of the crowd and the purpose behind the run, bringing a layer of emotion and connection to the composition, which aligns with my interest in illustrating moments where joy, effort, and community come together through vibrant and expressive visuals.
Ao criar essa ilustração, fui imediatamente atraída pela energia única de DJ Schak correndo a Great North Run enquanto fazia um set ao vivo, e quis traduzir essa sensação de movimento e ritmo em uma imagem estática. O que mais me interessou foi como a música e a resistência se fundem na performance, então busquei capturar esse fluxo dinâmico: o corpo em movimento, o equipamento portátil de DJ e elementos visuais sutis que sugerem o som se propagando com ele. Ao mesmo tempo, considerei a atmosfera coletiva do público e o propósito por trás da corrida, trazendo uma camada emocional de conexão à composição, algo que dialoga com meu interesse em ilustrar momentos onde alegria, esforço e comunidade se encontram por meio de visuais vibrantes e expressivos.

The Happy Newspaper celebrates all that’s good in the world, a platform to share positive news and wonderful people. The Happy Newspaper has been released quarterly, containing happy news which has been collected over a period of three months. The newspaper is a 32-page publication organized chronologically, with news articles arranged month by month. Not only is the paper packed with only positive stories from across the globe, it also has an entire section dedicated to our Everyday Heroes. Each issue is based around a theme and includes various features, poems, showbiz, food and more combined with beautifully colourful illustrations throughout.

After a few collaborations with The Happy Newspaper, I was invited to create two spot illustrations, and for these new pieces I wanted to bring in elements that are very present in my practice: my influence from the world of comics and one of the things I enjoy the most — drawing letters. Including “let’s go” on the sole of the sneaker was a way of capturing the energy of the moment in a subtle but playful detail. Lately, I’ve been working mostly digitally, both for practicality and speed, even though I’m also a printmaking artist and enjoy more complex processes. I usually work in layers: starting with the composition sketch, moving into line art, and then exploring color palettes until I reach a point where the colors truly illuminate the illustration, often not the first palette I imagine. Although it may sound like a linear process, it involves a lot of back and forth until everything feels balanced and cohesive.
Após algumas colaborações com o The Happy Newspaper, fui convidada para criar duas spot illustrations e, para essas novas peças, quis trazer elementos muito presentes na minha prática: minha influência do universo dos quadrinhos e uma das coisas que mais gosto de fazer: desenhar letras. Incluir “let’s go” no solado do tênis foi uma forma de capturar a energia do momento em um detalhe sutil, mas divertido. Ultimamente, tenho trabalhado principalmente de forma digital, tanto pela praticidade quanto pela rapidez no processo, apesar de também ser artista de gravura e gostar de técnicas mais complexas. Costumo trabalhar em camadas: começo com o esboço da composição, depois passo para o line art e, por fim, exploro paletas de cores até chegar a um ponto em que sinto que elas realmente iluminam a ilustração, muitas vezes não é a primeira paleta que imagino. Embora pareça um processo linear quando descrito, há muito vai e volta até que tudo se torne equilibrado e coeso.

For the Women’s Rugby World Cup illustration, I approached the image as if it were a diary page, bringing together elements like stickers and a journal page composition to evoke a sense of memory and personal storytelling. I was interested in capturing not just the event itself, but the feeling of witnessing something historic and meaningful. By treating the scene as a keepsake, almost like a collected moment in time, the illustration becomes less about documentation and more about emotion, translating a powerful collective achievement into an intimate and special memory.
Para a ilustração da Copa do Mundo de Rugby Feminino, pensei a imagem como se fosse uma página de diário, reunindo elementos como adesivos e uma composição que remete a uma fotografia de recordação, criando uma sensação de memória e narrativa pessoal. Meu interesse foi capturar não apenas o evento em si, mas a emoção de presenciar algo histórico e significativo. Ao tratar a cena como uma lembrança guardada, quase como um momento colecionado no tempo, a ilustração deixa de ser apenas um registro e passa a traduzir um sentimento, transformando uma conquista coletiva poderosa em uma memória íntima e especial.
